In the six years since she jumped a plane to Tokyo, Gen Kay has established herself as one of Japan's favourite photographers - quite a feat for someone who arrived there with merely a $10 photo album of snapshots as her folio. Before Gen had hit 30, she had developed an impressive body of work, securing editorial commissions for the likes of Vogue Japan, Vogue Girl Japan, and her first cover for Nylon Japan.
Apparently the secret is out, with Gen's effortless style attracting a diverse range of clients such as McDonalds, Telstra Bigpond, Peter Alexander and Dotti when back in Australia. When not shooting print, she makes sublime super 8 films featuring muses such as Nick Cave's Melbourne based son, Jethro.
Gen's editorial clients include Vogue Japan (Conde Nast), Harper's BAZAAR Japan, Nylon Japan, Nylon Guys, Vogue Girl Japan, Elle Japan, Lula UK, Vogue Australia, Madame Figaro Japan and Abercrombie & Fitch Quarterly.
Gen's portrait work includes Stella McCartney, Daniel Radcliffe, Paris Hilton and Marianne Faithfull.
Gen is a truly international photographer. She has an uncomplicated style and a personality to match. Gen lives and works between Sydney, Melbourne and Tokyo.
